Kimi Antonelli transformed a seemingly damaging grid penalty into one of the defining performances of the 2026 Formula One season when he won the Italian Grand Prix from 19th on the grid.
The Mercedes driver fought through the field at Monza before passing teammate and championship rival George Russell late in the race. The victory gave Antonelli his first home win and made him the first Italian driver to win the Italian Grand Prix in 60 years.
Antonelli had started near the back after taking new power-unit components. His recovery became possible as he combined strong pace with aggressive overtaking and a successful strategy that saw Mercedes pit him under a Virtual Safety Car.
Fresh tyres eventually gave him the advantage over Russell, who had stayed out on older hard tyres. Antonelli passed his teammate with four laps remaining and held on for victory.
A championship statement at home
The result was more than a popular home victory. It strengthened Antonelli’s position at the top of the championship.
The 20-year-old now leads Russell by 66 points with 10 races remaining, according to the latest championship standings reported after Monza. The gap gives Antonelli room to absorb setbacks, but his performance at a circuit where Mercedes had faced strategic and competitive pressure also demonstrated the depth of his current form.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised the drive and compared Antonelli’s development with some of the sport’s greatest performances.
The result also underlined Ferrari’s difficulties at its home race. While thousands of Italian fans arrived at Monza hoping to celebrate a Ferrari victory, Antonelli became the driver who delivered the moment.
His victory now changes the character of the championship. Russell remains the closest challenger, but Antonelli has moved from promising young driver to clear title favourite.
The remaining races will determine whether the Monza performance becomes the defining moment of his breakthrough season or the foundation of his first world championship.
